Basic Steps

  1. Transfer your image: Choose your subject — sea turtle or cuttlefish — and color the back of the paper with a graphite stick. Center and tape onto your watercolor paper. With your ballpoint pen, begin tracing the outline of your image.
  2. Apply Watercolor Layers: Build transparent washes from light to dark to capture form and movement.
  3. Dry Thoroughly: Allow the paper to dry completely before inking.
  4. Add Ink Details: Outline key shapes, textures, and patterns using waterproof pens to enhance contrast and definition.
  5. Final Touches: Lift highlights, deepen shadows, and add small details for a polished finish.
